mm chicken

I have decided that it's infinitely easier to build something that works well rather then edit/fix something that doesn't work well. OsCommerce is pure gobbledygook, and I look forward to never working with it ever again. There's practically no comments at all, so I have to decipher everything first, and it's got nested tables up the hoo-haw, which is also no good at all. Also, no grep to use, since this current host I'm working with doesn't have shell access. So sad.

On the bright side, there's chicken in the oven. Methinks I need to ask Google how long to cook it.

Oh yeah, and my computer works again. A faulty memory card, apparently. So now I'm chugging along at 512mb as I await my new card friend's arrival in ye postal service. Weee.

My neck hurts. Common causes of neck pain: stress, sitting in a chair too long, long hair, and large boobs. I think I need to go punch gravity in a painful place.

Misc comp stuff

So I ended up taking the computer to someone over on Staples Mill. I just looked around at places that were nearby, and avoided the ones with crap websites. Albeit, the place I took it to doesn't have a website, but they have been Better business Bureau certified for the past 3 years, which hopefully counts for something. So I'm waiting still to hear the prognosis.

Random internet thing: if you need hosting you should totally use site5.com. I got an account with them recently, and it's smooth sailing, better then any other hosting company I've ever used.

Stupid Pooter part 33 1/3...Help?

Bought video card, video card didn't do squat. Now need to return video card. Circuit City will soon regret having ever sold me anything. Ugh. Am at a loss at this point.

Here's a question for all of you out there that happen to be near me:

Could you recommend a decent shop to take my sickly computer to?

Stupid pooter part Deux

The power supply was a no-go. I'll need to be returning that soon and get my dollars back. So it's something else. Video card? When I plug the monitor in to the monitor plug that's attached to the motherboard, the monitor still doesn't connect. But I'm not sure if that computer has on-board video stuff for the monitor - I just thought it might, since it's got a monitor-friendly plug (VGA?). So I'm debating if I should try getting a new video card anyhow to test it. Though, I'd wanna make sure there's a proper return policy for that, too. And, it's a pain to drive out to Circuit City just to return stuff.

I might need to just suck it up and take it to a repair shop. I'm looking at the Firedog website (Circuit City's help stuff) and I'm kinda wary, considering the vast costs for doing piddly things ($30 to install software?!). I dunno, I'll figure something out.

Stupid pooter!

So today's been a bust. I turn on my monitor only to discover that the weird issue has returned of the 'monitor not connecting to the computer' thing. The brief knowledge I gleaned from Doug involved it likely being a power supply issue. And, based on the lack of any beeps coming out of the computer at startup, this also makes it seem more likely (at least based on the beep-counting information I've gleaned from the Internets today). We went out to Sears and got a voltmeter (multimeter, actually, quite exciting!), and it vaguely alludes to power supply issues. So, I believe that as soon as Drew gets back from work, we shall be making a run to Circuit City for a power supply. Fun times.

On the bright side, being at the mall at 10:00 am is almost pleasant.

Oh man, so I'm this close to having an absolutely beautiful horizontal menu using mostly css and ordered lists (and a slight bit of javascript), so smooth!

I still have not yet managed to watch a movie, as I have been wanting to do for awhile now. I've been itching to rewatch Swiss Family Robinson, cause I'm cool like that. On the bright side, we've found the playstation controllers, and therefore I need to make the tough decision if I should spend the rest of the evening reading or playing Puzzle Quest. Hmm..

I think I've now read all of the Jon Krakauer books. So good! I am now sure that I neither want to go climbing in the Himalayas, nor be a polygamist fundie Mormon. I think it's interesting that he decided to branch out into the latter topic, as up until then he was pretty strictly into the 'cold weather adventure' sorts of writings. I look forward to seeing what other sorts of directions he chooses to persue in future writings.

I wish I could make Thai food as good as Thai restaurants. It's dang hard to replicate a good Thai curry, from my experience at least.

Gasses!

Gas is getting waay too expensive for my blood. Conveniently, I'm now underemployed, thus having few places to go to in a car. I really want to go hiking this weekend, though, and will have to suck it up and pay those dang prices. I will soon be starting a stint of selling Homelands MTG cards, which there is (strangely enough) a market for on Ebay. Yay for money. Hiking was to be on Saturday, and was to be a group thing, but Carolyn's knees fell off and Drew developed Homeworkitis. Turns out Jules & Doug are coming up Saturday, so I suppose all works out for the best. I might still try to go on Sunday, though. I could use some private time with my mp3 player, as I rather miss listening to radio shows, and rocking out to noises that are good for rocking out to.

Music! I heart Basshunter. He better come near Richmond or to DC when he does his US tour soon. Also, I need to thank seaya for recommending the Thalia dancey cd like 6 months ago, because that is some good stuff indeed.

Oh yeah, I ignored all 4 of you that told me what to put on that cake. The results are here for those of you that care.

Happy Wednesday (huh huh 'hump day')!

Oh man, I heart curry more then your mom likes cake! Mock duck curry is intriguing. Slightly salty, and not at all like a rubber ducky! If you live in Richmond, I greatly recommend Elephant Thai, over by VCU. Nice and cheap and delightful. Tip Thai is rather good too, I've only been once but they have a delightful lunch special, it's up on Staples near Parham.

The PS2 is quite tragically buried deep in boxes. This is quite a shame, as Puzzle Quest is calling to me in voices that are painful to ignore. Due to my CD drive being busted, still no Civ for me. Which, honestly, is probably for the best.

View Poll: Cake?

Food blog ahoy!

Finally, it lives.

I've got tastyniblets.com up and running. I rather like Wordpress, it's quite functional. I also saved myself the trouble of completely doing a brand new design by just altering the background and header images of the default template. I'm rather pleased with how the header came out.

So, from now on all food related posts, i.e. whereupon I post all those pictures of my dinner and such, will be at that site instead. Ideally, I'll try to post every 2 days, depending on how often I have something I'm eating that's interesting/photogenic/etc. Yup.

For those who care, you totally want to rss it on your livejournal! Be warned though, there's not to be any lj-cuts for large quantities of images. Not to say it'll be image-heavy all the time or anything, but hey, you never know.

Lack of Jobness update

I'll tell you, it was a lot harder then I thought it would be. So many people seemed very sad to see me go, I had parting food and gifts and everything. This is completely the opposite of the previous job that I had quit, where when I left it was like me leaving on any other day, barely an acknowledgment at all (albeit, I was told by one coworker later that he hadn't realised I was leaving that day). Yesterday, though, was so sad. Logically, I know I made the right choice. I had long grown bored and frustrated with the work I did, and it was starting to affect my general mood. However, work was like social club. I liked so many of the people I worked with, and would not have kept working there for nearly as long had it not been for them. So, it was hard, and I still feel a bit melancholy about the whole thing. I'm still gonna see some of these people at outside-work occurrences. For example, today I'll attending Hussein's lunch thing along with several other work people, tomorrow I'll likely attend the Spring-Bada-Bing where I will run into other people, and then Monday I'll be giving blood at Christine's apartment complex (they're giving out Chik-fil-a coupons!).

Another thing that may drive me down a bit is the lack of put-togetherness and unpacked-ness our current apartment has. While I moved in here with the understanding that Drew simply would not have the time to unpack until the semester was over, I still cannot help the fact that it's messing with my chi. Being back on the old computer, now propped up on a reject dining room table, might not help as well. I should really just take the new computer to a shop to see what's the matter with it. I've never done that before though, and I feel like I should be able to figure out for myself why exactly it stopped wanting to work properly. It's not like I'm that literate at all about computer hardware, yet I somehow still feel the tinge of failure for not being able to locate the source of the problem. No good at all.

On a final note, here's something that I had not realised about work. Apparently, since we'd moved into the new building about 2.5 years ago, Christine and I have talked about cheese every single day. Tara and Charlie were keeping count. For awhile Tara was even writing down the time of day we first mentioned cheese (usually within the first hour or two there, apparently). I knew I was frequently hungry at work, but had no idea how much this affected what got talked about! Anyhow, she actually kept a list of quotes for awhile, and I'm going to document them here, as I am greatly amused by them:

"I can't stop thinking about cheese" - me

"I'm on a cheese phase. Everything I want has to have cheese on it." - Christine

"It's brietastic!" - Christine

"When I think of all the places I'd like to visit ..... Japan, Hawaii, Europe ..... I really want to go to Wisconsin. They have such cheese there" - me

"I like broccoli and cheese. I love cheese, and broccoli is a good carrier for cheese." - not marked, but probably Christine

"Ah, that special blend of cheese and chocolate." - me
"I know how much you like that." - Christine
"Well, that's what you do, you get your chocolate fountain and dip your cheese in chocolate." - Vanna

"I think cheese balls are a beautiful creation, one of God's greatest gifts to mankind." - me

"I've got Godiva over here. Mmm, that looks delicious. If only we had some cheese to dip it in." - Christine (As an aside, we would on occasion purposely talk about the combination of cheese and chocolate, as Charlie seemed particularly horrified by this.)

"If you can make homemade mac and cheese.." - me
"...while watching Star Wars..." - Christine
"You can constipate your way into my heart!" - me (likely a conversation about getting Christine a date)

"I want to have a cheese convention." - me

"Mmm...cheese with a 'Z'. Best cheez ever!" - me

"Wouldn't it be awesome to have an 8' cheese wheel and make a unicycle out of it?" - me
"No, then the cheese would get dirty." - either Christine or Charlie, markings are unclear, probably Christine though

"They ought to make giant rods of string cheese designed to beat you upside the head." - me

"Gosh, if we could only get some rabbit's piss!" - Nina (not having to do with cheese, but funny as it has to do with Nina)

"I wish I had a cheese log." - Christine
"I wish I was a cheese log!" - me

"...you could eat it while sitting in a kiddie pool full of melted cheese." - me

"I want to conquer the world with cheese." - me

"I think I want to have a Butt Period." - me (also nothing to do with cheese, I believe the conversation at the time was about art movements)

"Cheez doodles?" - me
"I'm getting kinda sick of eatin' those, too." - Christine
"Blasphemy!" - me

Yup, I am definitely going to miss social time at work. And all of the food that people more or less constantly brought in. I am, however, looking forward to doing work that I enjoy and value and means something to me. I'll try to focus on that part more.

I have a new friend! It is tall-ish and pointy and green and will hopefully keep my other friends company. It is a kiwi cactus that I received from Tara as thanks for having, awhile back, given to her a very nice Harry Potter picture book that I had had the luck to snatch from the Free Table at work. Ah, free table, how I will miss you. I have a rather large container of baked beans in my cabinet right now, the most recent of spoils from the Free Table. It'll be just alleyways and the Freecycle community from here on out, I suppose.

Speaking of beans, I am in the process of securing tastyniblets.com for the future splicing off of all food-related entries from this current blog. I hope I did not make mistake by getting the com rather then the net. This is something that should not be overthought, however, as it will hurt my brain in all sorts of superfluous manners!

In other news: Guys don't make fudges with girls who hold grudges.
Neck hurts

I'm hoping the soon to be lack of jobness will do better things for my neck. The right back side at the base of my head is stiff much more often then I'd like. No good at all!

I need to make my lunch.

Today was the first set of rounds for the Connect 4 championship at work. I beat Jarman, then Beth, and tomorrow will go up against either Jason or Dwayne. It's too bad the numbers got drawn as they did, as I highly suspect it would have otherwise come down to just me and Dwayne, but as it is, some poor sucker will end up having to go up against one or the other of us the last round. Christine totally made it to day 2, having lost her first round but, due to us needing a workaround for the attempted bracketing of 12 players, she drew one of 2 'turn bonus' slips of paper to play another game, and won that game against Vanna. Tomorrow's games should be fun.

Mediterranean food tonight, and yogurt drink that did not agree with me at all. Liquefied diarrhea is no fun at all.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention: I got christened by yesterday's impromptu thunderstorm. My wise old self decided it was a great idea to bike to the atm when there were dark clouds brewing in the sky. Oh, had I only left 10 minutes earlier. At the atm, the first little drop fall. Just a few blocks back, the torrential rains begin to fall. I walked the bike the rest of the way back, getting completely soaked in the process. I tried to ride a bit at first, but there was too much water, too much wind, and it had just been too soon since the car accident for me to brave enough to bike in such crappy conditions.

Here's something frustrating: why is it that all colleges either come across as elitist and overpriced, or as party schools? No good at all. Also frustrating: if I'm planning on taking a bunch of time off to teach myself new things, why would I need to spend a bunch of money for a school to teach me things? Time will only tell if disillusioning thoughts about going to grad school will grow or recede.

Clothing and more!

If you need to identify a bird, whatbird.com is incredibly useful!

I bought shoes today, 2 pairs! One for athletic purposes, one for hiking purposes. Also, overpriced but very functional lotion. I did not, however, get tank tops, as I currently bulge in the unfortunate way that makes me not want to purchase any item of clothing whatsoever.

I find it interesting that the swimsuit department at Macy's actually has a sign up stating they have D-cup sizes, as if D cups were actually something impossible and extraordinary. I have a swimsuit that fits, for which I am glad, and I hope I don't change size anytime soon, as swimsuit shopping is quite a pain. I just don't understand why swimsuits aren't sized like underwear, especially the top parts. Who decided that the wide variety of breast sizes and band sizes in this world could be divided into 'small', 'medium', and 'large' for swimming purposes? Makes no sense at all.

Fishes!

Oh man!

So, we decided to try out Fuego tonight, the new Mexican/Latin restaurant/nightclub over on Broad st. near Mekong. First off, I had no idea that there was a latino grocery store #2 right near it, almost across the street from latino grocery store #1 on broad. Anyhow, the inside was vast, with a giant wobbly mirror on one wall, and further back in was a bar and more tables and presumably an area for clubbing, which we did not access. Was rather empty (us really being the only people there) until a few people showed up for the bar a bit later. Anyhow, I order fried fish, and I totally got a whole fish, fried. It was even looking at me! Also, it was garnished with cucumber, tomato, lime chunks, onion bits, and a festive radish. Plus, fried rice (with bits of vegetables and chicken), refried beans, and a shredded salad-like pile on plate number 2. And, on plate 3, three soft tortillas. It was very artful and fun and tasty and I even have 1/2 a fishie in my fridge to eat tomorrow. I don't often see artful plate presentation at Mexican restaurants, so I was quite pleased. Also! Maybe because they're new and trying to drum up business, but we got a free apple empanada for dessert, which was quite delightful.

I've come across such a huge range of quality of Mexican restaurants, it's crazy. So I totally need to go back to this place and get more food, especially because they had a few dishes that came with yucca/plantains, very exciting! Also exciting was that our meal, before tip, was $20 (the tip was generous, given the empanada). No ceviche on the menu, but I'll live, somehow.

Tomorrow I will be shopping. I've started hacking up the backyard for future plantlife. I made red curry the other night, decent enough for then but mediocre at best as leftovers. Estha the cat often goes to sleep with me at night, which is cute. I find that covering up the pillows (and the sheets when we remember) so that cats don't hair all over them seems to take care of all of my allergy issues. I just have to remind myself not to rub my face all over the cats.

The pooter got sad again

See, I wanted to take the hard drive from my old computer and put it in the new one. But then I realised that I was having some slot and cord match-up issues, and decided it would be easier to just burn stuff to disk and transfer it over that way. Thing is, the cd-rw stopped working in the old computer. Never fear though, I decided to temporarily move the cd-rw from the new computer over to the old one briefly, for the duration of time it took to copy stuff. When finished, I moved it back to the old one. Very simple process. Thing is, now the computer starts, but the monitor, which still gets power, doesn't show any sign of connecting to the computer. We've tried tightening everything, but still no luck. Also, when I plug in my mp3 player, no sign of being connected to the computer (though it does get power and acknowledge the computer's presence). The computer, in sound and light, looks like it is on and doing what it's supposed to be doing. However, since the monitor won't connect (and I've tried connecting another monitor to no avail) I have no way of knowing what the problem might be.

Seems the most obvious thing is that something got loose in the process of me removing and adding back the cd drive. But, I tightened everything, and everything looks ok. Maybe something shorted or died magically? Everything still has power, though. We tried moving the video card around to see if that was the problem, but unfortunately, both of our computers were too old to have the proper holes for it. Yuck. I just don't know what to do about this, it's rather frustrating!

Wonton? Not now.

Unpacking is going about as fast as such things can be expected to go. Living room is still nonfunctional, but the other rooms are getting there. The new (to me) pooter is fabulous, I shall post pictures when I get around to it. There was a bit of an ethernet strife, but that was managed successfully. Next, I need to move my dvd drive from the old box to the new one, figure out the logistics of also moving over the hard drive, and seeing if this switch I have is useful at all. It's the prettiest pooter ever!

Now here's a bit of insanity for you: I turned in my 2 weeks at work today.

I've been wanting to leave for awhile, but I like a lot of the people there greatly, so it's waited until now. See, the 40 hour a week paint-by-numbers thing just isn't cutting it anymore (for those out of the loop, I do watercolor reproductions). My brain is completely not used at all, it's just pure mechanics at this point. It was nice for awhile to just listen to NPR shows and audio books and lectures all the time, but I need something else. I'm not interested at all in what I do anymore. I've tried to do some of my own work for the company on my own time, to see if I can pull in some royalties, but that's just not worth it either. I've made very little off what I have produced, and haven't really enjoyed making said art or really liked how it looked. I'm just not cut out for the home decor world. That, and it's been quite awhile since I've tried to do much of anything on my own, for that matter. My job is making me hate painting, and that's just no good at all.

Now the tricky part is the fact that I don't actually have another job to do to. But, never fear, this is all in the plan. Based on my job hunting in the past few months, I've learned that my web portfolio is meager (I seek a web job) and I'm lacking strength in some necessary skills. So, time off. I already know I can work from home according to my own set schedule, as I did it for almost 2 years at my current company. So I plan on first finishing Vanna & Suzanna's website. I will give myself daily Flash lessons. I have piles and piles of projects I've been wanting to play with that would allow me to play with more PHP and SQL, and I will finally have the time to do said projects. And, most importantly, I shall budget.

I save money like a fiend, and am generally a cheap bastard. Meaning I've got a bit of cash to live on for awhile. Admittedly, it will suck to once again have no health insurance, but considering I went 4 years without health insurance before, I'm going to not let this get to me too much. If they come my way, I would also like to do some independent web work, much like I'm currently doing for Suvana Ethnic Greeting Cards (which, incidentally, makes me want to stab OSCommerce).

Also, I plan on doing grad school in the Fall of 2009. I bought a schload of GRE study material off of someone from Craigslist recently, complete with flashcards! I'm very interested in doing Computer Science in some way. Frankly, I'm sick of the art world and want to go in a different direction. This time off will prepare me for such an endeavor in the same ways as it will prepare me for another job (portfolio and skill building). There is also the added bonus that my income this year will not be nearly as much as it could be, which bodes well for govt-giving-me-money FAFSA purposes.

I also had a brilliant idea about making a 'Learn Spanish Nouns' picture book as an excuse to, well, learn Spanish nouns (which I am very lacking in) as well as do some fun drawing stuff. This is more of a future side project, though.

So that's vaguely the plan. First, I've got to get this pooter up to speed though. And, for that matter, go eat some cookies!

Mmm...cookies.

Moving stuff`

So we're completely in the new place now. This past weekend was hellish, as I moved the vast majority of my stuff on Friday, many humans helped move the remainder of my things and Drew's things on Saturday, and Sunday involved cleaning both apartments, which was a hellish task. Today is the first day I can go up and down stairs without excruciating pain! We have barely begun the task of unpacking, and it will likely take awhile, as Drew may not have much time to devote to such things until the semester is over.

Busy busy am I

Packing currently, moving this friday-saturday. Making business cards!

Need to do dishes.

Go read Middlesex. It's about Greeks and hermaphrodites and is so so excellent.

Don't read Wuthering Heights. This thing is a classic? I wanted to beat all of the characters with a stick.

Listening to Mansfield Park currently, Austen's first book. It's no Pride & Prejudice, but it still sure beats Wuthering Heights.

p.s. Rumor has it that Chipotle isn't partially owned by McDonalds anymore. And, according to Christine's most recent visit, they're not so tightass about what ingredients you can and can't put on your burrito (Cheese or sour cream? No more!).

This is all.

p.s. There's little greenies all over the tree-ends. This is a beautiful thing.

Happy Easter!

A month or two ago, I bought a super cool hat from someone off the internets. I was gonna take a picture but forgot until now. I totally failed at looking manly, hello kitty agrees (you can't even see my flexin' arm!).

Anyhow, celebrate today wisely with lots of chocolate, or sex, or Jesus, or whatever other means you have to use. Personally, I will be eating glorious amounts of turkey.

And here's an Easter hookup for all of you:

Remember back when Paypal started, and they offered people $10 to sign up (though I didn't sign up until the offer had dropped to $5)? Revolution Money Exchange seems to be doing pretty much the same thing as paypal (I'm sure there's differences between it and Paypal) including offering a monetary incentive for signing up, which I found out about via this site.

I signed up, and got my $25, my glorious and free $25. And I'm gonna encourage you to do so as well, because, hey, it's $25. Err, and I get a $10 bonus for referring people. So it would be super if you used this link to sign up, I'll love you forever.

Also, to be eligible for the $25 bonus, you have to sign up by March 31st.

Moving party!

So, here's some moving details, for anyone here who will be assisting with the move. First off, we will not be getting a moving truck. This is because Doug has offered us the use of his truck. Neither Drew or I have any furniture that would be too big for the back of a pickup truck. I've also seen the 'move with a truck and a few cars' thing in action before when helping Scott T. move, and it works rather well. In fact, while it does take slightly longer, due to more driving, it does have two big advantages:

1.) It's good for avoiding the headaches of trying to arrange the furniture and boxes into a truck so that they fit and things don't get crushed all weird and all that stuff.

2.) You have forced breaks, as you have to sit down in order to drive loads around and all. Yay, breaks!

Said moving will take place Saturday, the 29th. I haven't talked to Drew about the starting time, I'm thinking 10ish or 11ish maybe, but again I need to talk to Drew before confirming a final time. I'm anticipating people will likely meet at his place, and go from there. Since this is moving 2 people from 2 places, I decided to be prudent about things and take Friday off. I'm going to make a sincere effort to move over as much of my stuff on Friday as possible so that, if all goes as planned (hoped?), all I'll have left to move over are the items too large and ridiculous to fit into my car. Or too heavy, as my arms are weak and spindly. Albeit, this might work out well also for splitting people up, since it might be good to have people at both Drew's place and the new place, so people can drag stuff outside while others are dragging stuff inside. I guess this will be figured out in time.

Also! There will be pizza provided for all helpers upon completion of the moving process. It shall be cheesy and glorious.

Dang, I'm tired!

Tomorrow will be mega packing!

I am unsuccessfully attempting to sell off stuff I don't need, via craigslist ads. I got one taker for the 3 harry potter books, but have not heard back from her since yesterday, so that might be a no-go. I need to post my dresser as well, it's heavy and ridiculous and completely unnecessary considering the vast quantities of closets at the new place.

Upon getting more time, I need to look into how to make Facebook applications. This is because, despite the fact that so many are utter time-destroyers, there are a few that are really quite enjoyable (Scrabulous anyone? Or Scramble, for that matter?), and I think it would be worthwhile to learn how to make them myself.

That which is ridiculous? Shoe Carnival. Apparently it's not the season for there to be women's hiking shoes. The sales person told me this. I mean, it's spring! That's pretty much the beginning of hiking season for me! Then Drew points out that most people that wear hiking boots most likely don't really hike. Also ridiculous: there were zero high top athletic shoes for women. Where's my ankle support?!

So about this whole potential Florida and Michigan re-vote thing. I don't really have an opinion as to if it should or shouldn't happen. I just hope that the Dem. party realises that, should the two states be allowed to redo their primary voting, that means there's absolutely nothing that can be done if, in 4 years, a bunch of states want to move their primary up earlier, since this precedent would get set. Since "Hey, don't do that or we won't count your votes...just kidding!" is not really effective. This not really addressing the fact that it's rather flawed anyhow to have certain states that end up being more important then other states just because of when they vote and all. If anything, this current election season, with it's neck to neck democratic candidates, is totally making all of the states feel warm and fuzzy and important, not just the early ones!
