Coeds

January 10th, 2008 (05:55 pm)

So I've been thinking that 'coed' is used to describe a student at a coeducational school. So it's a term should apply to both males and females, right? So why is the term 'college coed' always used to apply to a female? So I'm guessing it refers to when all males schools began integrating females into their schools, and thus, at the time, the females were the students that made the school coed, and thus ended up being called coeds. But this makes no sense to call someone a coed from a school that has always accepted males and females, right? And what about a school that has traditionally been a women's college. If they start accepting males, would the males then be the coeds? The term just makes no sense.

Re: i expected better of you!

Helloo! I was referring to common usage here! I have never ever heard a male referred to as a 'coed'. And, based on #4 in your pasted dictionary info, I think this is strange! And neither of you have done anything to explain why #1 (and thus, the most common usage) in the dictionary info refers to just females being coed, when coeducational should refer to (as the most common usage, imho) both males and females. Thus, this definition has only told me what I already was aware of and has done nothing to explain why, when someone says 'coed', they are almost definitely going to be referring to a female! Jeezey Creezey!

psh-aw! your excuses are lamer than straight to dvd squeals!
who talks about coeds anyway, outside of porn reference?

but if you must get into it, its the historical context, like you touched on. back in the day, public and state universities were indeed, male only.
hence the birth of women's colleges.
and so the breakdowns of boundaries occurred in this matter: state/public universities were "kind" enough to allow co-eds on their campus, while women's colleges who changed their rules on gender, just sold out.

"co·ed

i think the point VA is making is that it is silly to use the noun "coed" to refer exclusively to females, which is what this dictionary entry does. yes, the adjectival form can refer to both, but "coeds" is a plural, & adjectives are not usually pluralized. who got served?

so, welcome to the sexist "real" world. bathrooms to your left, double standards to your right. enjoy the show.

I'm amused that you dedicated an entire entry to this train of thought.
